10 months after Mahad bridge collapsed, killing 30, new 3-lane bridge will be inaugurated...

Nearly 10 months after the bridge over the river Savitri in Mahad, Raigad collapsed, killing 30 people, a new three-lane bridge will be inaugurated today. The Union ministry of highways and state public works department said they built the new Rs37.55-crore bridge alongside the old one in a record 165 days.

Heavy rain led the British-era bridge to collapse on August 2 last year. Two buses were swept away. The new bridge will be inaugurated by Union minister Nitin Gadkari and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. The bridge is part of the Panvel-Mahad-Panjim (NH66 ), which connects Mumbai to Goa and other southern states.

Several other road projects in the region, collectively worth Rs4,500 crore, will also be launched on Monday in the presence of railway minister Suresh Prabhu and heavy industries minister Anant Geete.
