Amid a flurry of food awards for the North East comes more good news for some of the region's fish and chip shops which have been named among the UK's best.
That's the view of The Good Food Awards 2023 which has announced regional winners in a variety of categories. Besides its eponymous awards which go to restaurants, the event announced Good Chippy Awards for best fish and chips as well as accolades for hotels, gastropubs, cafes and takeaways.
The North East is already renowned for its fish and chips so it's no great surprise that a host of fishy favourites from in and around Newcastle have landed the spotlight in these awards too. The Good Food Awards 2023 follows lots of recent successes that underpin the region's reputation for offering a range of top-notch cuisine.

They follow on the heels of the Good Food Guide which highlighted The Raby Hunt; naming the Michelin star venue as the fourth most exciting restaurant in the UK. But, fine dining aside, it seems that people just love the humble meal of fish and chips too, especially when it's elevated to such a high status.
The Good Food Awards are free to enter and are based on merit. They are presented to venues with high customer ratings and votes for their food quality, service and value. Here is a run-down of the North East top 10 pick which is dominated by two companies which are already local favourites: Downey’s and Dhillons.
