10 'cheap eats' in Northumberland on TripAdvisor that are perfect for a budget

Northumberland has a fantastic food scene with everything from Michelin-star food to fantastic fish and chips on the menu.

If you eat out in the county a lot, you may start to notice that having an impact on your bank account - especially with the cost of living on the rise across the UK.

But that doesn't mean you have to miss out on treating yourself to something tasty every once in a while. Eating out in Northumberland doesn't have to be expensive, with everything from Mexican street food to cosy cafes ready to tempt those on a shoestring.

Piper's Pitch

Of course the famous food van in Craster's Quarry Car Park serves the village's local delicacy - kippers from the smoke house.

It's got a range of Northumbrian and Scottish sarnies too, and nothing costs more than a fiver. The van offers a couple of veggie options, but the majority of the menu is meat and fish.

Piper's Pitch is ranked the top cheap eat in Northumberland on TripAdvisor, with more than 400 five-star ratings. A recent review said: "After a lovely walk we stopped here for tea and kipper buns. Not only was the food wonderful, but the service friendly and had a great chat about the the nature of haggis in the different regions of Scotland! Will be after the Auchtermuchty next time. A must try if your passing and even worth a detour for."

The Riverside Cafe

7 Main Street, Tweedmouth, TD15 2AA

The popular cafe in Tweedmouth offers cheap eats both for those sitting in and taking out. As well as its regular menu which has a range of sandwiches, paninis and cakes, you can come here for your Sunday Roast if it takes your fancy.

One review said: "Popped in for lunch en route from Edinburgh to Yorkshire. It was very busy and it was easy to see why. Ginormous portions of very tasty food at reasonable prices. Very friendly, efficient staff. Well worth a visit."

Little Mexico

4 Market Street, Hexham, NE46 3NU

Serving a range of Mexican Street Food just off Hexham's Market Place, Little Mexico brings a taste of Latin America to Northumberland.

As well as burritos and quesadillas, there's a juice bar with where juices and smoothies are made from fresh fruit. Other than sharing platters and mega nachos , everything on the extensive menu costs less than £10.

One Hexham visitor said: "We went to Little Mexico yesterday, amazing food, so cheap too. Lovely selection of smoothies, juices, cocktails and warm drinks. Colourful and well decorated interior and the staff were so friendly and helpful. Photos of the food don't do it justice. If I lived here I'd visit all the time!"

The Sand Bar

Amble's Sand Bar is just over the road from the village's Sunday market and Quayside. It offers home made meals including pies, slow cooked stews, and sandwiches.

With most items on the menu coming in below £7, you'll have a full belly without needing to empty your wallet.

Dogs are welcome too, which delighted one reviewer, who said: "Really friendly and a great breakfast. Lovely relaxing vibe and great coffee! Dog friendly and definitely a reason I’ll be back."

The Harbour View

Have you even been to the Northumberland coast if you haven't had fish and chips? Probably not. Seaton Sluice's Harbour View is the highest-ranked chippy in Northumberland on TripAdvisor and that's high praise indeed.

Offering both a restaurant and takeaway, you can take your fish and chips down to the beach or watch the boats bobbing in Seaton Sluice's peaceful harbour. Harbour View can get extremely busy when the weather's good. But it's worth the wait, with customers coming from far and wide.

One visitor to the area said: "We were staying in Northumbria & did our research on the best fish & chips in the area. We plumped for the Harbour View and wow, what a great choice! Delicious food served in a nice clean restaurant by the most friendly of staff. Portions were gigantic. A regular haddock was larger than a large at any other chipper! Would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys top class fish & chips."

The Corner House

31 Church Street, Berwick upon Tweed, TD15 1EE

This cosy cafe in Berwick upon Tweed is known for more than just its food. It has a roaring fire where you can curl up with a book (there are plenty to choose from in the sizeable bookcase). Though if you're feeling more sociable, there are board games too.

Of course, there's locally roasted coffee, as well as teas, home made cakes, bread, scones and other hot food. It's been described as a hidden gem, though it is only 2 minutes from Berwick's town hall on foot.

One impressed reviewer said: "Thrilled to find this friendly tea shop. Amazing selection of home made cakes, and proper tea in mismatched cups and saucers. Just what the doctor ordered!"

Thistle do Nicely

Berwick-upon-Tweed may be the most northerly town in England, but the punnily-named Thistle do Nicely has its soul firmly in Scotland.

The tartan clad menu offers home cooked meals, tray bakes, cakes and scones, as well as daily specials. It's a popular breakfast spot for many Berwick locals too.

One five-star review said: "A lovely, clean, friendly and extremely reasonably priced café with great food. Would recommend the Full Monty All-Day breakfast for those with serious hunger pangs. Will definitely be returning."

The Old Bakehouse

Morpeth's Old Bakehouse Cafe is a popular spot for breakfast and lunch in Northumberland's County Town.

In the summer months, there's a cute outside sitting area which is great for people watching as you enjoy a snack and a drink.

One impressed reviewer said: "We stayed at Morpeth Castle and treated ourselves to a breakfast out, prior to an action packed day. The full English and the omelettes are to be recommended - fresh, hot and tasty, with a generous portion. You're greeted on arrival by a lovely lady, who is a fabulous ray of sunshine to start your day. Happy to make adjustments to menu options and is very good at recommending places to eat in the evening."

Sinners Cafe

1 Sidey Court, Berwick-upon-Tweed, TD15 1DR

If you're looking for cheap eats in Northumberland, you're spoilt for choice in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Sinners Cafe serves a range of dishes and has vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options too.

On TripAdvisor, you'll find more than 200 five-star reviews, many along these lines: "Lovely little find. Great service with a smile, lovely food and value for money. Nothing too much trouble and when it rained when we were outside, the lady quickly helped move us inside! Definitely one to visit again!"

The Drift Cafe

Cresswell, NE61 5LA

The Drift Cafe is right on the coast at Cresswell and is a popular meeting point for birdwatchers thanks to how close it is to Cresswell Pond. It's a great place to stop for a break on a walk on the beach or cycle along the Northumberland Coast.

As well as freshly prepared home cooked food, the cafe has a selection of second hand books, paintings and prints - with dogs welcome.

More than 700 five-star reviews recommend the Drift Cafe, including this one which said: "After a lovely walk on the beautiful sands at Cresswell what more could you want but a spot of lunch? Well the Drift Cafe delivers in spades! had the gammon soup and a bun, my other half a hot dog... lovely food, even lovelier staff. A gem of a place."
