Nearly a third of the 66 people shot in Chicago over the weekend were attacked on the West Side, in an area that has seen a decline in gun violence since last year.
At least 18 people were wounded by gunfire in the 11th Police District from Friday evening through early Monday, 10 of them in just three attacks near Garfield Park, according to data kept by the Sun-Times.
The district is historically one of the most violent in the city, but it has seen considerably fewer shootings this year, according to police data. Murders are down 18% and shootings are down 21%.
This past weekend, though, the district bore the brunt of gun violence in Chicago.
Four people were shot in a neighborhood where there have been three other mass shootings in the last three months. They were standing in the street in the 2700 block of West Jackson Boulevard around 1:45 a.m. Saturday when a black truck approached and someone got out and began firing a rifle, Chicago police said.
The next day, around 3:15 p.m. about a mile away, several people were changing a tire in the 3300 block of West Harrison Street when a dark SUV pulled up and someone opened fire, police said. Three people were shot and wounded.
Less than three hours later, in the 4000 block of West Arthington Street, a car approached three people and shots rang out. All three were wounded, police said.
One of the weekend’s five fatal shootings occurred less than a mile away in North Lawndale in the 11th district, according to police.
Alshaud J. Scarbough, 24, was in a car in the 4400 block of Roosevelt Road in North Lawndale around 6 p.m. Sunday when he was shot in the head and leg, according to police. He was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital.
A 16-year-old boy was also among those killed in Chicago over the weekend, in the Washington Park neighborhood on the South Side.
Tyshawn D. Crawford was near a parking lot in the 5900 block of South Indiana Avenue when he was shot in the abdomen around 6 p.m. Sunday, police said. He was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Other attacks over the weekend:
- A man and a 25-year-old woman were arguing in the 5400 block of South Winchester Avenue around 3:30 a.m. when another man, 37-year-old Huberto Rosales, tried to intervene. The man pulled out a gun and opened fire, striking Rosales in the head, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was shot in the armpit and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where her condition was stabilized, police said.
- On Saturday, a man was fatally shot at a party in Logan Square. Someone pulled out a handgun during an argument and shot Carlos Villagomez, 34, in the head at the gathering in the 3700 block of West Fullerton. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he died at 1:50 a.m., authorities said.
- About 3:15 a.m., two women were shot and wounded along a popular Old Town nightlife stretch on the Near North Side. Chicago police officers on foot patrol heard shots and found the two women in the first block of West Division Street, police said. Both were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition. A suspect was taken into custody after a brief chase and a weapon was recovered, police said. No charges have been announced.
