Hugh Grant had prompted the Benny Hill Show theme song to be played during a live news broadcast about Boris Johnson 's resignation earlier, which had amused viewers.
Yakety Sax - best known as the closing music from the comedy series starring the late Benny Hill - was heard in the background of reports from College Green this morning.
Reporters and politicians had flocked to the area - near the Houses of Parliament - amid news of the Prime Minister's resignation as the leader of the Conservative Party today.
During a Sky News broadcast with MP Chris Philp at around 11.30am, the song was loudly heard in the background - coming from speakers with political activist Steve Bray.
The politician managed to continue discussing the latest developments over the Tory party's leadership, with the footage later circulating on platforms such as Twitter.
It's since been revealed that it was actually actor Hugh who inspired the musical stunt, with him having tweeted political activist Steve about the idea earlier this morning.
He wrote shortly before 9am: "Morning [Steve]. Glad you have your speakers back [after having them confiscated]. Do you by any chance have the Benny Hill music to hand?"

Steve, sharing footage of the song being played, later tweeted: "Just for [Hugh] as requested here today at the media circus… College Green. The Benny Hill theme tune."
Viewers were amused by the incident, with them describing it as "hilarious," "brilliant" and "amazing." One person commented in a tweet that the "timing was beautiful".
Another responded by tweeting "great work Steve" and comedian David Baddiel addressed it, writing: "When it begins again for the second round ... f***ing brilliant."
Political activist Steve is known for protesting with music and the Benny Hill Show theme wasn't the only song that he intertupted news broadcasts in London with today.
He played Bye Bye Boris - a parody of the Bay City Rollers' track Bye Bye Baby - near the gates of Downing Street as Boris was addressing the nation over his resignation.
It's been reported that Steve - who has 154,000 followers on Twitter - had his speakers confiscated by police last month under new legislation targeting protesters.
