2021: The year of the NFT – so much so, Collins Dictionary crowned it the Word Of The Year with a jaw-dropping usage increase of 11,000 per cent.
NFT’s have been circulating for some time now and everyone has something to say – including Keanu Reeves.
With their new film The Matrix Resurrections, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss sat down to discuss the concept of digital scarcity, crypto and NFTs.
He laughed – which kind of said it all.
“Did you guys see the Matrix NFT they did for Resurrections a couple days ago?” The Verge’s Alex Heath asked. “They came out with 100,000 of them and the site broke within a few hours because there were 300,000 people in the queue trying to buy these NFTS.”
Heath added, “When you think about the concept of digital scarcity, and things that can’t be copied,” to which Reeves said, “that are easily reproduced”, before busting out into laughter.
For the blissfully unaware, a “non-fungible token” (NFT) describes the unique digital identifier that records ownership of a digital asset. Any digital creation – including a picture, a video, a piece of music or even a tweet – can become an NFT, with the most valuable selling for £50.3 million at a Christie’s auction in March.

The clip became an instant social media sensation after fans found his response hilarious.
“Sharing this under here because I love his “EE HEE HEE,” one shared, while another joked: “Interviewer still trying to get his pitch in like, “uH wEll nO AcHtuaLLy…”
“This has more value to me than any NFT will,” one humoured.
Another called his reaction “the correct response to NFTs.”
While one Twitter user fired a shot at the interviewer: “Imagine having the chance to interview NEO AND F**KING TRINITY ABOUT A NEW MATRIX MOVIE and you use it to ask them about NFTs.”
Good morning to Keanu Reeves’ and his laughter only. https://t.co/r1vgOjPfER

If someone laughed at me like that I would quit my job honestly https://t.co/CJVtamZIij

Although I find his response funny & currently mostly true.. NFTs are basically a digital receipt that can’t be faked. They can be used as proof of ownership of rare or expensive goods. NFTs for jpegs is dumb ya, mostly money laundering I bet.. but the tech can work. Web3 ftw?

I'm so glad Keanu finds NFTs as hilariously stupid as I do. His laugh is like chicken soup for the digital soul. https://t.co/whUb6WTNrN

Earlier in the interview, Reeves admitted to being unfamiliar with blockchain and crypto technologies. He explained how a friend had bought him crypto but is holding out.
The Matrix Resurrections will hit cinemas on December 22.
