Lanarkshire Scouts enjoy a weekend of family fun

A Lanarkshire Scouting group had a great time with a family fun weekend recently.

The Burnside 113th Scouts sent 132 young people, leaders and adult relatives for a weekend of adventure at Auchengillan Outdoor centre near Drymen.

The youngest was just two years old, while two of the leaders, Graeme Hamilton and Nigel Macdonald, received their 40 year volunteer service certificates during the camp.

Whilst some families chose to stay indoors, others selected the outdoor camping option and a couple of them even slept in hammocks strung between two trees.

All of the young people took part in age- appropriate onsite activities ranging from kayaking, mountain biking and archery to axe-throwing, laser-tag and water-walking.

The leaders also organised activities and sports for all in their own area- ensuring everyone had an exciting 48 hours.

Graeme told Lanarkshire Live: "Food was provided and everyone joined in to help with the preparation and clearing up. Families were encouraged to undertake a series of easy challenges and capture these moments on a family selfie while leaders and parents helped build amazing catapults or explored the grounds on an orienteering trail.

These youngsters had a great time at Auchengillan Outdoor centre (RGR)

"On Saturday evening, we were joined by the South East district explorer Scouts who were celebrating 20 years of that section for a roaring campfire and some off- key singing before heading back to the lodge for a supper of pancakes and hot chocolate.

It was the first family camp the Burnside group have held in over a decade and they were delighted at how it went.

Graeme added: Our last family camp was to celebrate our centenary back in 2009. It’s great when we can bring all members and their families together to experience the fun of scouting, to try new things and to say thank you to all our amazing volunteers.

"I’m sure it won’t be too long before we have another family camp but meantime the sections are all planning their own sleepover events for the winter and spring.

"We really do have an amazing team of adult volunteers here at the 113 who are helping young people develop skills for life and having fun whilst doing so."
