English Heritage has selected some of its creepiest castles to visit this Halloween. Read on for some spooky places to visit in the coming weeks.

Bolsover Castle, Derbyshire - around 90 minutes drive away

Bolsover Castle (Derby Telegraph)

Bolsover Castle is said to be one of the most haunted castles in the country. In fact it was voted by English Heritage staff as the spookiest site run by the charity in 2017.

Staff reported mysterious footsteps, muffled voices, doors slamming suddenly and cold sensations. Some even reported being pushed.

Built on an ancient burial ground, the castle is full of eerie tales. Staff even keep a special ‘ghost book’ so visitors can record their experiences.

The castle you see today was built in the early 17th century, on the ruins of a 12th century mediaeval castle. It features The Little Castle, an extravagant retreat created by playboy, poet and courtier Sir William Cavendish, who is said to haunt the castle.

Conisbrough Castle, South Yorkshire - around 90 minutes drive away

This castle has stunning views across South Yorkshire and dates back to the 12th century. The impressive keep has been restored so you can appreciate the magnificence of original building.

Some visitors have reported feeling a strange ghostly wind in the keep, which stands at 28 metres high. Conisborough was built by Lord and Lady de Warenne, and visitors can immerse themselves in their world.

Carlisle Castle, Cumbria - around two hours drive away

A bit further afield, Carlisle Castle is over 900 years old and has served as a working fortress within living memory. It has faced many sieges and battles over the years and has an imposing atmosphere.

In the castle dungeon, located in the depths of the castle keep, you’ll find the ‘licking stones’. They are said to have been worn smooth by the tongues of prisoners licking the damp walls for moisture.

In 1819, it’s said that workmen in the Captain’s Tower discovered skeletons within the walls. In 1568 Mary, Queen of Scots was also held captive here, under the orders of Queen Elizabeth I.
