Hair experts warn about trendy style worn by celebs that causes 'bald patches'

Specialists have warned against sporting a trendy hairstyle, as over wearing it can contribute to hair loss.

Loved by celebrities like Molly Mae-Hague, Hailey Bieber and Sofia Ritchie, the slick back bun is a great do to give off an elegant look with minimal effort. All it takes is tying your hair up into a simple bun, then smoothing down any excess fly away hairs with spray or gel, resulting in a sleek, neat coif.

But one trichologist has explained how the style can actually put strain on the hair's roots and may even contribute to a type of hair loss known as traction alopecia. While this can be reversed if caught on time, traction alopecia can lead to permanent bald spots if it goes unnoticed.

Arran Isherwood, Senior Trichological Specialist at FUE Clinics explained: “Gaining popularity in the summer of 2022, thanks to Hailey Bieber sporting the look, it would be hard to imagine that this sleek style could cause damage to the hair.”

“However, tight, slicked-back buns that pull on your roots can cause traction alopecia: a form of hair loss caused by repeated hair pulling. With the amount of tugging that happens when you put your hair up like this, it's no surprise that it can cause breakage or even bald patches.”

“Thankfully, traction alopecia can be resolved if the problem is recognised quickly and tight hairstyles like braids, cornrows, high ponytails, and sleek back buns are avoided. In time, hair follicles will grow back.

"However, if diagnosed too late, hair follicles may be destroyed, meaning regrowth is not possible.”

Luckily, there are plenty of natural ways to stimulate hair growth to ensure thick, luscious locks. Experts at FUE Clinic previously explained how pumpkin seed oil is full of natural compounds that speed up cell turnover, which is how hair grows.

FUE also advises anyone looking to boost hair growth to eat a protein rich diet full of lean meats, eggs, oily fish and nuts. Hair itself is made up of protein and too little can result in dry, thinning hair.
