Why Morocco’s goalkeeper has the nickname ‘Bono’ (and does it have to do with the U2 lead singer?

Morocco has made it so far into the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, facing France on Wednesday in the semi-final, with the winner heading to the final against Argentina.

And if they make it past France, some of that credit will surely belong to Morocco’s goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou.

That’s also the man known as “Bono,” and why is that? Nope, the nickname didn’t pop up because he’s a U2 fan, although that would be really cool.

It’s actually quite simple: Bounou’s last name is pronounced “Bono.” That’s it! Nothing to do with the other Bono!
