Uconn's Donovan Clingan Declares For NBA Draft After Title Win

Donovan Clingan, the 7-foot-2 center from UConn, has announced his decision to leave the university after two seasons and declare for the NBA draft. The sophomore shared his intentions on social media, expressing his lifelong dream of playing in the NBA. Despite the success he experienced with the Huskies, including back-to-back national titles, Clingan felt the time was right to pursue his professional aspirations.

Coach Dan Hurley had consistently touted Clingan as a potential NBA lottery pick, along with freshman guard Stephon Castle, whose plans for the future remain undisclosed. Clingan, a highly sought-after recruit out of Bristol Central High School, opted to remain in-state and join UConn.

During his freshman year, Clingan played a supporting role behind Adama Sanogo, the standout player of the 2023 Final Four. Despite averaging 6.9 points and 5.6 rebounds, Clingan's impact grew significantly in his sophomore season after assuming a starting position. He faced initial challenges with foot injuries but rebounded to average 13 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game.

In the NCAA Tournament, Clingan elevated his performance, averaging 15.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks over six games. His defensive prowess was evident in the championship game against Purdue, where he was tasked with guarding the 7-4 star Zach Edey. Despite Edey's impressive 37-point performance, Clingan's defensive efforts limited Purdue's 3-point shooting, contributing to UConn's 75-60 victory.

Clingan's departure marks the end of a successful collegiate career with the Huskies, culminating in their sixth NCAA title. His decision to enter the NBA draft reflects his commitment to pursuing his dreams at the professional level, leaving a lasting impact on the UConn basketball program.
