Best TV shows on TV tonight

Long Lost Family, 9 pm, ITV1

There’s something of a shock in store tonight when Paul is reunited with his birth mother, 13 years after hearing she’d passed away. Diane was just 16 when she gave birth to Paul, but was forced to give him up against her will by her mother. Now, almost 60 years later, she enlists Nicky Campbell, Davina McCall and the Long Lost Family team to help her find her son, unaware that he’d also initiated a private search for her in 2010 – only to be told she was dead!

Elsewhere, 57-year-old Sara goes in search of her birth family after losing two members of her adoptive family. She is reunited with three siblings she never knew existed and learns the truth about the troubled life of her birth mother.

Liza Tarbuck is the celebrity travelling companion of blind comedian Chris McCausland in this final episode of his travelogue, and the pair visit the spectacular and world-famous Niagara Falls in Canada.

As well as getting drenched at the iconic site, they try their hand at axe-throwing and sample poutine, a dish of French fries and cheese curds topped with gravy. The two also learn about the history and culture surrounding the Falls and find out if they’ve got what it takes to survive in the wild.

Supermarkets Unwrapped: The Vegan Aisle, 8 pm, Channel 4

Amid recent headlines that vegan food sales are on the decline after the market has become oversaturated, the Food Unwrapped team investigate plant-based and dairy-free alternatives, with Helen Lawal using Tesco as a case study to find out how retail giants keep up with trends. Elsewhere, John Whaite discovers the secrets of meat-free sausage skin, Briony May Williams finds out how to make quiche without egg and Kate Quilton learns just how to milk an oat! With 38% of the UK population replacing meat once a week, the vegan aisle looks likely to remain fully stocked for a while yet.

Is It Cake Too?, Netflix

In Is It Cake Too?, a fresh batch of bakers who specialize in hyperrealistic bakes are tasked once again to make the most unlikely objects out of cake — this time around, think baseball gloves, weekender bags, toilets and even the Mona Lisa herself — with the hopes of deceiving a slew of seasoned chefs and celebrity guests.

The new seasons sees 10 chefs hoping to take home their share of a $120,000 prize pot, so there's everything to bake for.

Best film on TV tonight

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, BBC iPlayer

Still sporting those alarming black horns, Angelina Jolie returns for the sequel to Disney’s spellbinding Sleeping Beauty spin-off. In the first movie, Jolie’s malevolent fairy was more tragic than evil. Here, the story’s villain is clear-cut, as Michelle Pfeiffer’s ruthlessly intolerant Queen Ingrith plots to wipe out all magical creatures, using the forthcoming wedding of Maleficent’s beloved adopted daughter Aurora (Elle Fanning) to her son Prince Philip (Harris Dickinson) as a trap.

It is visually spectacular, and it’s great to see the awesome Jolie lock horns (so to speak) with the equally imperious Pfeiffer. A magnificent diversion for those already on summer holidays.
