Toxic train derailment devastates East Palestine, President Biden finally visits

President Joe Biden is set to visit East Palestine, Ohio, a year after a significant train derailment caused a devastating impact on the community. The toxic plume resulting from the incident involved the burning of 120,000 gallons of vinyl chloride, leading to groundwater contamination and widespread concern among residents. To gain insight into the community's response to the president's visit, D.J. Yokely, a lifelong resident and business owner in East Palestine, provided his perspective.

Yokely expressed his frustration at the delayed response from the Biden administration, remarking that while the president was busy addressing international matters, East Palestine faced mounting challenges and received little support. He acknowledged the resilience of the American people and commended the community for rallying together during this difficult time.

Regarding the current situation in East Palestine, Yokely mentioned that President Biden would witness the 'new normal' upon his arrival. Despite ongoing efforts by blue-collar American workers to rebuild and sustain their livelihoods, Yokely noted the impact of businesses leaving the area, including his own business having to relocate. He emphasized the importance of adaptability in the face of adversity and acknowledged the support of fellow citizens during such trying times.

When asked about the possible political motivations behind President Biden's visit, Yokely dismissed the notion that it was solely tied to election campaigns. He referenced former President Donald Trump's prompt response to the situation, which Yokely believes genuinely revitalized his campaign. Yokely asserted that the American people saw through President Biden's delayed visit as an attempt to gain support rather than a genuine concern for the community's welfare.

The conversation shifted toward the challenges faced by residents within a one-mile radius of the train derailment. Yokely touched upon the difficult choices individuals had to make concerning their safety and properties. He criticized the lack of answers and responses from elected officials and expressed concern about the uncertainty surrounding the long-term effects of the incident.

Yokely concluded by predicting a mixed reception for President Biden's visit. While he acknowledged the welcome extended to the president, he emphasized the need for concrete solutions and positive news to address the ongoing issues faced by the community.

In response to questions about local sports activities, Yokely confirmed that school sports had resumed due to excellent communication between school administrators and support from local corporations. He also drew a comparison between the public outcry over a sports decision and the lack of accountability for President Biden's delayed visit.

With President Biden's scheduled visit approaching, East Palestine remains focused on recovery and eagerly awaits solutions and support from the highest office in the country. The visit serves as an opportunity for the president to comprehend the ongoing challenges faced by the community and potentially offer much-needed aid and resources.
