Texas Governor Abbott Warns Of National Security Risks At Border

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott speaks during a news conference about the panhandle wildfires, Friday, March 1, 2024, in Borger, Texas. Wildfires have destroyed as many as 500 structures in the Texas Panhandle

During an appearance on 'America's Newsroom,' Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott expressed concerns about President Biden's border policies and their potential impact on national security. Governor Abbott highlighted the issue of terrorists entering the country through the southern border, stating that the current administration is not taking sufficient measures to prevent this threat.

Abbott emphasized that the number of apprehended terrorists at the border has reached a record high, surpassing figures from the previous administration. He also raised alarm about the possibility of terrorists evading capture and entering the country undetected, citing warnings from the FBI director about a potential 9/11-style attack.

One of the key points of contention is Texas' anti-illegal immigration law, SB 4, which allows local law enforcement to arrest illegal immigrants and facilitates their deportation. However, the law has faced legal challenges from the Biden administration, which argues that it is unconstitutional and interferes with federal immigration enforcement.

Despite efforts by Texas to defend the law in court, including recent oral arguments before a federal appeals panel, its implementation remains on hold pending further legal proceedings. The state contends that the law is necessary due to the perceived failure of the Biden administration to secure the border and enforce immigration laws effectively.

The ongoing crisis at the southern border has prompted several states, including Louisiana, Iowa, and Tennessee, to consider similar measures aimed at addressing illegal immigration. Texas' legal battle over SB 4 reflects broader tensions between state and federal authorities regarding immigration policy and border security.
