Sunderland linked with loan move for Leeds United forward after Joe Gelhardt success

Sunderland have been linked with a move for Leeds United youngster Sonny Perkins. That's according to TeamTalk who claims the Black Cats and Blackburn Rovers are both keen on a loan move for the 19-year-old.

Perkins was part of the Whites U21s side that won promotion from Premier League 2 Division 2 last year and bagged 13 goals at youth level following his summer switch from West Ham United. The majority of those goals came in the opening months of the season, scoring eight in his first seven games.

That run of form saw him make three senior appearances for Leeds in cup competitions, notching a late equaliser in the FA Cup third round at Cardiff City. The England U19 international is highly thought of at Elland Road and has seemingly outgrown the youth team.

Sunderland are one of six teams reportedly interested in signing the youngster on loan this summer, with Blackburn and Birmingham City also credited.

The Black Cats have a positive working relationship with the Whites after taking fellow prospect Joe Gelhardt on loan for the second part of the 2022/23 campaign. Gelhardt made 20 appearances for Tony Mowbray's side, scoring three goals and notching three assists.

The youngster was originally signed to play alongside Sunderland front man Ross Stewart, but an injury to the Scotland international ended any hopes of a partnership. It mean Gelhardt was forced to play a lone striker role and took some time to adjust.

However, the loan was viewed as a success for all parties and Sunderland could benefit from that loan if they make a move for Perkins this summer.
