Strictly Come Dancing sparks string of complaints as show makes Blackpool return

There have been a string of complaints on social media about Saturday Night's edition of Strictly Come Dancing. The show came under fire on its return to Blackpool, as fans they noticed some odd camera directions - which one viewer described as a "horror".

It was made all the worse because it was the eagerly-anticipated return for the popular BBC contest at the world renowned Blackpool Tower ballroom, which can trace its origins back to 1894. It was the first time the show had been broadcast from the iconic venue for three years due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The remaining celebrities in the competition — Hamza Yassin, Fleur East, Ellie Taylor, Helen Skelton, Kym Marsh, Molly Rainford, Tyler West and Will Mellor — donned their dancing shoes for one of the show's highest scoring weeks with just nine points separating the top and bottom slots on the leaderboard. Fleur East and Vito Coppola scored the 20th series' first perfect 40 with their Couples' Choice routine, danced to a Destiny's Child medley.

However, fans following the show on Twitter felt they were constantly being distracted during the routines by apparent changes to the camerawork. The Liverpool Echo quoted several of the comments, including one from viewer Marcus, who said: "The cameraman is having a mare, ain't he."

Jon Petweets moaned: "What the hell happened to the camera team?! The overall coverage was worse than usual!"

Levi said: "Obsessed with the camera operator completely missing Ellie and zooming into a random step instead." Jen commented: "What is going on with one of the cameras at the bottom of the dance floor tonight? Not having a great time is it?"

Briony tweeted: "Oh dear. Quite unsteady at the beginning. And what is going on with the camera angles? Plus, we shouldn’t see the attaching to harness on camera, very poorly shot."

GEe posted: "What is going on with the cameras tonight though?" Neo added: "The camera work is horror tonight".

Anton Starch said: "Despite the ropey direction/camera work I enjoyed Strictly tonight. Fleur was fab, tho I think if she deserved 40, Hamza & Helen did too, and there was a LOT more technical content in their routines, it seemed to me. They must be finalists; the 4th could be anyone except Ellie."

Later, viewer Theresa chipped in with: "Too much going on. Between the terrible camera work and too many dancers on the floor at once, I don’t know where to look." User @nutellabite noted poor audio quality too: "The audio was dreadful," to which Daydreamer responded: "I thought it was just me, really bad quality."

And @Luke512 tweeted: "The camera work was shocking! I honestly don’t know what went wrong with it!"

The BBC have been contacted for comment.
