Shotts prison guard 'bleeding heavily' as murderer turns violent in jail cell attack

A murderer left a prison officer scarred for life after thumping him in his cell.

Stuart Murdoch, 31, punched guard Kevin Hall on the face inside HMP Shotts leaving him bleeding heavily. The violence erupted as prison officials and NHS staff attended to discuss medication with Murdoch.

Mr Hall had noticed a metal pole in the cell and decided to remove, enraging Murdoch. After the attack guards battled to bring Murdoch under control and in the melee Mr Hall lost a tooth.

The prison officer was taken to Wishaw General Hospital for treatment where he received five stitches and suffered a permanent scar to his lower lip.

Murdoch, caged for the brutal slaying of Anthony Laurie, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court and admitted to the attack.

Sheriff Ray Small handed him a 15 month sentence but backdated it to March last year.

The court heard his earliest date of release is in 2031.

Depute fiscal Jennifer Cunningham said: "Prison officers were within Shotts prison carrying out their duties when they attended at the accused's cell with NHS staff to discuss medication.

"The complainer is a prison officer and spoke to the accused and noted he had a metal pole in his cell and decided this should be removed.

"When the prison officer mentioned this the accused became angry and attempted to kick Mr Hall but missed.

"He then punched him in the face and was restrained by other officers including Mr Hall.

"It was noted that Mr Hall was bleeding heavily and part of a tooth was missing.

"He was taken to Wishaw General Hospital and treated for a laceration on his lower lip and bruises to his face and required five stitches for the wound."

His lawyer said Logan 'regrets' the incident taking place in in February 2020.

Sheriff Small said: "You are serving a life sentence with a realistic date of consideration for release as far away as in 2031.

"For me to put anything on the end of that is not realistic or appropriate.

"It is a serious matter to assault prison staff particularly when they are there to assist you."

Murdoch murdered Anthony Laurie, 25, during a confrontation at a house in the Carbrain area of Cumbernauld in October 2015.

He repeatedly stabbed 25-year-old Anthony Laurie after he tried to buy valium from him.
