A search has resumed for a man swept off rocks north of Sydney while fishing with three others.

Two men and a woman were rescued and treated by paramedics after being swept into the waters of Fingal Bay in Port Stephens on Saturday morning.

A fourth angler, a man in his 60s, was not found.

An extensive search was initiated before being suspended at 6pm, due to dangerous surf conditions.

The multi-agency water and land-based search resumes on Sunday morning.

One of the rescued anglers, a man in his 50s, suffered injuries to his upper torso and was flown to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.
