PSG manager talks with Julian Nagelsmann 'collapse' to hamper Kylian Mbappe plan

Julian Nagelsmann is not expected to become the new manager of Paris Saint-Germain - which could have an impact on Kylian Mbappe's future.

PSG will appoint a new manager this summer to replace the incumbent Christophe Galtier, who failed to lead the French giants to Champions League glory. Nagelsmann was the frontrunner for the job, but it's believed talks between the two parties have collapsed.

Mbappe, 24, is refusing to sign a new contract, which could force PSG to sell their talisman this summer. The World Cup winner's existing deal expires in a year's time, and he is refusing to trigger a one-year extension. PSG don't want to lose him on a free transfer.

PSG were planning on appointing Thierry Henry as Nagelsmann's assistant to appease Mbappe, but those plans have now been scuppered. Real Madrid are the favourites to sign Mbappe if he leaves the French capital, with Manchester United also in the frame.

As reported by L'Equipe, PSG and Nagelsmann have been locked in negotiations for several weeks, but these talks have now collapsed. They are not expected to get back around the table with the German and are looking at alternative targets.

Jose Mourinho is one of the frontrunners for the PSG job. The experienced manager is being tipped to leave Roma this summer after rebuilding his reputation in the Italian capital. As a two-time Champions League winner, Mourinho could be the ideal candidate.

PSG have dominated French football of late - winning nine of the last 11 Ligue 1 titles - but they have failed to lift a maiden European Cup. The closest they have got to winning the Champions League was in 2020, when they lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich in the final.

The Champions League is viewed as the ultimate for PSG's owners, Qatar Sports Investment. The group is backed by Qatar's sovereign-wealth fund, making PSG one of the richest and most competitive forces in European football.

PSG want to move away being viewed as a team of individuals and will say goodbye to the likes of Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos this summer. Rather than sign superstars, the ambitious club will try to build a team capable of European glory.

PSG would like Mbappe to be a part of their new era but are willing to sell him if he refuses to sign a new contract or agree an extension between now and the end of July. One idea to appease Mbappe was to appoint Henry as Nagelsmann's assistant.

Mbappe is said to have a healthy relationship with Henry, who is an experienced assistant coach after two spells with the Belgium national team. The Arsenal legend has also managed in Ligue 1 with Monaco and in Major League Soccer with Montreal.

Henry may still accept the assistant role at PSG, but that decision will depend on who succeeds Galtier at the Parc des Princes. As for Nagelsmann, the former RB Leipzig boss has been out of work since leaving Bayern Munich in March.
