Potential £50m arrival told Newcastle United are a 'bigger draw' than Premier League rival

James Maddison has been told that Newcastle United are a 'bigger draw' than Tottenham Hotspur as the race for the midfielder's signature hots up. Both Newcastle and Spurs hold an interest in the England international, with United's interest going back to last summer.

The Magpies attempted to sign Maddison in the winter window and have retained their interest in the 26-year-old but with him being one of the only to stand out in a season that ended in relegation for Leicester City, they have other teams who are keen to secure his services.

However with Champions League football to offer Maddison, it's felt by some that United would be a more attractive move than Spurs who for the first time since 2008-09, didn't qualify for Europe.

Speaking on The Everything is Black and White Podcast, Chronicle Live's Newcastle United Editor Aaron Stokes feels the choice should be easy for Maddison. He told host Andrew Musgrove: "James Madison was at St James' Park last month when Newcastle United secured Champions League football, all he needed to do really was look around that stadium.

"You won't get many places like that. Maddison, he may want to move to the bright lights of London, I lived there myself and it's a fantastic city but there are so many pros to joining Newcastle United.

"They have Champions League football, your England teammates are here, the club is on the up and you can join and become an instant favorite or move to London and join a club that doesn't have European football. Spurs, are a bit of a mess, it's a rebuilding job and they've got a manager who may or may not cut in in the Premier League.

"Tottenham is a great club and has a fantastic stadium but they've hired some very, very good managers over the years who for whatever reason can't get a tune out of the players. They've got a good squad and I've no doubt they'll be back next season but I just think Newcastle is just such a bigger draw at the minute."

Maddison has been on international duty with England alongside Newcastle stars Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier who were also part of the squad that beat Malta and North Macedonia last week. The former Norwich man has now jetted off on holiday but a decision on his next club is expected to be concluded by the start of July.
