Pets at Home, Matalan and American Golf: The 20 latest hires and promotions from across the North West

Household names have been among the North West businesses announcing a string of top hires and promotions over the last week.

The likes of Pets at Home, Matalan, On The Beach and American Golf have all made major moves.

Below, we round up the latest hires and promotions that we feel you should not miss.

Matalan

Matalan has named former bosses at Lidl and Co-op food as its new chairman and chief executive.

The Liverpool-headquartered fashion chain has appointed Karl-Heinz Holland and Jo Whitfield to the roles respectively.

The move comes after Matalan was taken over by a group of its lenders in January, ending the control of founder John Hargreaves.

American Golf

The chief executive of American Golf has left amid a board room shake up by its private equity backer, Endless.

Gary Favell had served in the role since October 2018, having previously been CEO at Bathstore from 2012.

Former Matalan interim CEO Nigel Oddy is to succeed Mr Favell.

BGF

BGF has expanded its North West team with the senior appointment of Helen Bartley.

She joins BGF’s direct origination team in Manchester, bringing over 20 years’ experience in corporate finance to the role.

She has worked across small, medium and 'Big Four' accountancy practices, followed by five years in industry, specialising in disposals, acquisitions and complex partnering arrangements.

On The Beach

Jon Wormald will become On The Beach's chief financial officer on June 30, 2023 (On The Beach)

On the Beach has hired a senior boss at THG's nutrition division as its new chief financial office.

Jon Wormald will join the Manchester-based group on June 30.

On the same date, current CFO Shaun Morton will succeed founder Simon Cooper as chief executive.

His promotion was first announced in December 2022. Mr Cooper will move to a new role of founder non-executive director.

Pets at Home has hired a new independent non-executive director.

Dr Natalie-Jane Macdonald MBE will join the Cheshire-headquartered group on May 27.

She spent eight years as an NHS hospital physician before moving into the private sector where she spent 17 years at Bupa holding various roles, including managing director of Bupa Health and Wellbeing.

She has chaired Nuffield Health since May 2020 and was CEO of Sunrise Senior Living UK until 2021.

Brazen

The team at Manchester PR agency Brazen (Brazen)

Manchester PR agency Brazen has announced a further restructure creating an executive committee below the board and a 14-strong senior leadership team.

The executive committee sees Corey Kitchener promoted to consumer director, Sophia Stewart promoted to insights and strategy director and Adam Moss promoted to news and creative director.

Rebecca Cohen is promoted to group head of social, content and influencers while Rachael Milligan becomes group head of destination marketing.

Vincents Solicitors

Vincents Solicitors has appointed Ruth Fryer to head up the Yorkshire Building Society agency branch at its Garstang office.

She joins the business from the Yorkshire’s branch in Lancaster where she has worked since 2020. Prior to that she was an advisor for Swinton Insurance for 27 years.

She said: "Savers want to make sure their money is working as hard as it can at the current time. With rising interest rates, people are doing more research to find the best deals to make more of their savings or looking to save on their mortgage payments. It’s great to see people are being directed to the Yorkshire via friends and family and various online listings."

Electricity North West

Chris Johns will be the new chief financial officer of Electricity North West from May 25, 2023 (Electricity North West)

Electricity North West has announced the appointment of Chris Johns to the board on May 25 as chief financial officer.

He has previously been CFO of Yorkshire Water, a role he held from June 2020. He has also previously held the roles of finance director of both Northumbrian Water Group and Northern Gas Networks, and before that worked in the regulated financial services industry.

Mr Johns replaces David Brocksom who is retiring from the board having been with Electricity North West since 2013 and on the board since 2015.

FI Real Estate Management

Louise Mason of FI Real Estate Management (FI Real Estate Management)

Chorley-based poperty company FI Real Estate Management has recruited a new head of marketing.

Louise Mason joins from Property Alliance Group where she was responsible for all elements of brand development and marketing across the group of companies.

She also spent three years at Manchester Airports Group (MAG) overseeing the marketing and brand proposition for the MAG Lounge brands and retail portfolio.

Sambro International

Richard Dinham of Sambro International (Sambro International)

Bury-based Sambro International has has appointed Richard Dinham as its new business development director.

He joins from Character Options and will now lead the UK sales operations.

Mr Dinham said: "Sambro is an exceptional company, with some amazing licenses and category within the toy sector. I’m delighted to be joining the company at such an exciting time and look forward to working with the wider team.

"My immediate focus will be on developing strategic client relationships for the business here in the UK. I’m also looking forward to working with the UK licensor retail teams too."

Ward Hadaway

Charlotte Nuttall, Caroline Shafar and Harmajinder Hayre of Ward Hadaway (Ward Hadaway)

Law firm Ward Hadaway has welcomed Charlotte Nuttall to its Manchester office.

She has over a decade of specialist experience in employment law. Throughout her career, she has advised on a wide range of employment and HR legal matters ranging from disciplinaries, grievances and performance management issues to redundancy exercises, re-structure processes and TUPE.

She said: "Ward Hadaway has often been the law firm representing the other party in cases I have been involved with and its lawyers always impressed me with how professional, talented and experienced they are."

The Momentum Group

Dan Lewis, The Momentum Group (The Momentum Group)

Liverpool property services company The Momentum Group has appointed Dan Lewis as construction director.

He was previously construction director at Manchester’s Medlock where he worked for nine years, during which time he was also project director for Medlock’s offshoot, Truman Design and Build in Bolton.

He started his career at Galliford Try in Warrington where he also studied for a construction project management degree at the University of Central Lancashire.

CRJ Services

Andrew Clarkson, CRJ Services (CRJ Services)

Knutsford-based CRJ Services has appointed Andrew Clarkson as full-time finance director.

Mr Clarkson said: "CRJ is a business that I have known for a while and been involved with on its growth journey over the past few years, but now is the right time to join the firm in a full-time capacity, working closely with the fantastic team here.

"I firmly believe that CRJ is a sleeping giant and with significant plans in place for the future, it is the perfect time to come in and help grow the business further, as more and more organisations are seeing CRJ as a one-stop shop for their plant equipment needs, making the potential of the business extremely exciting for the coming years."

Savills

Jonathan Ainley of Savills (Savills)

Savills has announced the appointment of Jonathan Ainley as head of its Manchester planning team.

Mr Ainley, who was promoted to director recently, will also sit on the firm’s Northern Planning Management Board - a combination of the firm’s planning teams in Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle, who collectively make up the wider Planning North team at Savills.

He said: "I’m delighted to have been given the opportunity to lead such a high performing and experienced team. Under Jay’s leadership, we have won some excellent projects and developed strong relationships across the region, and this is something we intend to build upon."

Mann Roberts Solicitors

Colin Vickers of Mann Roberts Solicitors (Mann Roberts Solicitors)

Liverpool-based dispute resolution specialist Mann Roberts Solicitors has made a senior hire.

Legal director Colin Vickers joins from global law firm DWF.

Managing director David Mann said: "During our first 12 months, the business has grown from an exciting start up to a forward-thinking law firm with an extensive range of instructions. Bringing in Colin as legal director is the next stage in our development plan."
