People let thoughts be known after Irish student served 'massacred' shepherd's pie at American university

Irish people have been sharing their horror after a Donegal student was served one of our national dishes in a very different way.

The student, who is studying abroad at a university in the United States, shared a picture online of their dinner - Irish favourite shepherd's pie.

However, the dish was not in its usual form, but rather was orange in colour with potato-skin-filled mash on top.

Posting a picture of the meal on the Reddit Ireland forum, they said: "Shepherds pie served at my American University (I’m an international student from Donegal)."

People were quick to share their reactions to the dinner, with some describing it as a "massacre" and "sacrilegious".

One person said: "There's an episode of kitchen nightmares where Gordon goes to an 'Irish' pub somewhere in the states and he orders the Shepherds pie. When he gets it he tells the owner if he served that in Dublin he'd be shot or murdered or something to that extent. I feel the same about this."

A second said: "U sure that's supposed to be shepherd's pie?"

A third wrote: "I've eaten some travesty mashed potato in the states.. clueless."

A fourth commented: "That looks awful. Was it made with mutton or beef?"

Someone else said: "Sacrilege."

Another person wrote: "It must be that fancy deconstructed shepherds pie you hear about."

While one said: "Look how they massacred my boy !!!"

A second added: "Why is it orange?"

And someone else chimed in: "It looks like something alright, but I wouldn't have said that something was shepherd's pie, or edible for that matter...."
