One casualty rushed to hospital following 'explosion' at Scots recycling centre

A casualty has been rushed to hospital after an explosion caused a 'large fire' within a recycling centre in Perth in the early hours of this morning. Multiple emergency crews raced to the Shore Recycling Centre in the harbour area of Friarton Road in the city at around 12.45am on Tuesday, February 28.

The Scottish Ambulance Service has confirmed one person was rushed to Ninewells Hospital, while fire crews remain at the scene this afternoon. The incident has caused widespread traffic chaos through the region, with M90 Friarton Bridge being closed following the blast.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 0044 hours on Tuesday to attend an incident on Friarton Road in Perth.

"We dispatched two ambulances and our special operations team (SORT) to the scene, with our first resource arriving within seven minutes. We transported one patient to Ninewells Hospital.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson advised locals in the area to keep their windows shut.

A spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 12.39am on Tuesday, 28 February to reports of a large fire within an industrial recycling centre at Friarton Bridge Park, Perth.

“Operations Control mobilised six fire appliances plus other specialist resources to the scene, where crews continue to tackle a fire involving approximately 200 tonnes of scrap material.

“Road closures remain in place and we would advise local residents to close windows in their homes due to levels of smoke.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 00.45am on Tuesday, 28 February, 2023, police were called to a report of an explosion and subsequent fire at the Shore recycling centre on Friarton Road, Perth.

"Emergency services are in attendance and the M90 is currently closed at Friarton bridge. Traffic is being diverted and road users are advised to avoid the area."
