North East set for another hot day with temperatures hitting 28C in some areas, say Met Office weather experts

The North East has been enjoying some great sunshine over the past few days - and that is set to continue.

Temperatures will hit the mid-20s across many parts of the region on Monday and in some areas the mercury could reach 28C, according to Met Office weather experts. However, there is a also a chance of thundery showers for some.

The forecast says there is a possibility of isolated thundery showers over the Pennines in the late afternoon. But there will be plenty of sunshine across the board, with the UV index classed as "very high" on Monday.

It is set to be "very warm" inland but cooler along the coasts. In Newcastle and Gateshead, the maximum temperature will be around 23C, while coastal areas will see highs of 19C, including places like Whitley Bay, Blyth, South Shields and Roker. Meanwhile, Hexham in Northumberland could get temperatures of 25C.

Met Office experts predict the weather will stay warm over the coming days. Here is the five-day forecast for the North East:

Monday

Any early mist and low cloud will quickly clear to give a mostly dry day with plenty of sunshine. A chance of an isolated thundery shower over the Pennines in the late afternoon. Very warm inland, cooler on coasts. Maximum temperature 28 °C.

Monday night

Any evening showers will die away, followed by a fine and dry night with light winds and largely clear skies. A chance of coastal fog in Northumberland around dawn. Minimum temperature 11 °C.

Tuesday

A bit of coastal fog in Northumberland initially but generally fine and dry with light winds and large amounts of sunshine. Still very warm though not as much as Monday. Maximum temperature 27 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday

Mainly dry through this period with generally large amounts of sunshine, but some coastal low cloud at times. Warm at first, although cooler on coasts, but temperatures trending slightly downwards.
