A.J. Preller, the San Diego Padres' general manager for the past few seasons, may be facing a shift in ownership dynamics as Eric Kutsenda takes the reins following the passing of owner Peter Seidler. While Seidler was known for a willingness to spend big on the team's payroll, it remains to be seen if Kutsenda will continue that approach. The Padres saw their payroll decrease by approximately $100 million after a disappointing 2023 season, which led to some high-priced players being traded away, hinting at a cost-cutting strategy.

Despite these changes, Kutsenda expressed a high level of expectation for Preller, praising him as an exceptional talent evaluator in baseball. Emphasizing accountability and setting clear goals, Kutsenda made it known that everyone in the organization, including Preller, must deliver results.

The Padres boast a talented roster including stars like Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., and new manager Mike Shildt, indicating that there is still potential for success in San Diego. However, the pressure is on for Preller and the team to achieve their goals and improve upon past performances under the new ownership leadership.

In other MLB news, New York Mets' slugger Pete Alonso expressed his desire to remain a Met for the long term as he enters the final year of his current contract. With a track record of impressive power hitting, Alonso is open to discussions about a potential long-term deal. The three-time All-Star recently switched agents to Scott Boras, a move that could impact any future contract negotiations.

Additionally, various player transactions have been taking place across the league, including the Arizona Diamondbacks signing veteran Randal Grichuk to a one-year deal worth $2 million and the Kansas City Royals acquiring right-hander John Schreiber from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for minor league pitcher David Sandlin. The Chicago White Sox also secured reliever Bryan Shaw with a minor league contract and an invitation to big spring training.

As the MLB offseason continues, teams are making moves and preparing for the upcoming season with expectations high and pressure mounting for players, managers, and front office staff to deliver results on the field.
