Microsoft clarifies plans for Xbox Games Showcase trailers

The Xbox Games Showcase is coming up fast, and Xbox’s vice president of marketing, Aaron Greenberg, clarified a bit about what to expect. Greenberg responded to a fan asking for gameplay trailers for announced games and computer-generated cinematics for unannounced games.

Greenberg said no trailers for Xbox first-party games will include full CG. Everything shown will feature in-game footage, in-engine footage – cutscenes rendered in the development engine, for example – or a mix of either of those and some CGI.

Greenberg’s comments come after Sony’s recent PlayStation Showcase in May 2023, during which most of the trailers shown consisted almost entirely of CGI cinematics, except Spider-Man 2. Most of the games Sony showed were also slated for a late 2023 or 2024 release date, though, so perhaps Xbox is only planning to highlight games that are closer to release this time.

What those games might be is anyone’s guess. Starfield has its own, dedicated presentation after the Xbox showcase ends, which leaves quite a few possibilities, including nearly all of Microsoft’s first-party games originally teased when the Series X|S launched: Avowed, Senua 2, The Outer Worlds 2, Fable 4, and more.

Greenberg also said Xbox will show no movie trailers, after Sony showed a Gran Turismo movie trailer during its own showcase.

The Xbox Games Showcase begins at 1 p.m. Eastern on June 11, 2023.
