Meghan Markle could still feature in The Crown as the future of Netflix show is revealed

Meghan Markle could be the centre of a new storyline in The Crown, despite the hit Netflix drama reportedly set to come to an end after series six.

The upcoming season, which is being filmed now, will explore Prince William's time at the University of St Andrews where he met his now-wife Kate Middleton.

A source has revealed bosses are hoping to take the show in a new direction which could see it follow in the footsteps of Downton Abbey and hit the big screen.

This would mean the show's creators would be able to focus on modern Royal Family gossip including Prince Harry and Meghan's love story, as well as the Duke Of Sussex's fallout with his brother.

"Although this sounds like a drastic change, it's one that proved a huge success for Downton Abbey, which ran for 52 episodes before continuing as two hit films.

"Creating a movie, or perhaps a series of specials, means creators would have so much more flexibility to jump in terms of time and topics," the source revealed.

So far, The Crown has focused on the fallout of Princess Diana and King Charles' marriage as well as the 1992 fire which severely damaged Windsor Castle.

Imelda Staunton stars as Queen Elizabeth, while Jonathan Pryce plays Prince Philip (Netflix)

Speaking to The Sun, the source added: "Down the line, there's the option to revisit the 21st century royals, perhaps focusing on Harry meeting Meghan and his fallout with William."

The Crown will return with 10 episodes later this year, with actors such as Imelda Staunton as the Queen, Sir Jonathan Pryce as the Duke of Edinburgh, West as Charles and Elizabeth Debicki as Diana, Princess of Wales continuing in their previous roles.

Ed McVey is making his professional screen debut as Prince William, while Meg Bellamy has been cast as his love interest Kate.

The series was due to end after the fifth season, but the show's creator and writer Peter Morgan later said it would be extended to include a sixth series.
