Leeds United have already been told what 'terrific' Karl Darlow would bring if transfer is sealed

Leeds United are still searching for a new goalkeeper this summer, with Illan Meslier expected to move on.

One player that has been linked with a move to Elland Road is Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow who is understood to be keen to leave the Magpies this summer in search of first-team football. The 32-year-old had plenty of interest in his services this summer, though both Hull City and Middlesbrough moved on to alternative targets.

Bournemouth and Blackburn have also been credited with interest in Darlow, though Leeds could be well-positioned to land the goalkeeper should they firm their interest up, with the move to Leeds meaning he wouldn't have to uproot his family too far from Tyneside.

And in terms of what Leeds would get if they did make the move for the former England under-21s shot-stopper, they only need look at the glowing references of his former managers. Steve Bruce was certainly a fan from the pair working together at Newcastle.

After a man-of-the-match performance to keep a clean sheet against Liverpool, Bruce said of Darlow: "He's had to wait patiently for his chance and certainly with the way he's trained. Martin Dubravka is now back fit but we needed our second goalkeeper to step up and at the moment the jersey's his because of his performances. We've had to call on him a bit too much at times but there's no denying he's been terrific all season."

In search of first-team football last term, Darlow moved on loan to Hull in January. It was a really successful spell that, until the finances of the deal stretched beyond the Tigers' means, left them desperate to have him back.

Their boss Liam Rosenior said of Darlow: “He’s been magnificent since he’s come in. I think he’s massively enjoying working here, I think he’s enjoying the club, he’s settled in with the players really really well.

“What I really like about Karl was as soon as he signed he had his young family come and join him and settle down in the area, and I think that’s helped him. Hopefully we’ll have discussions in the summer about his long-term future.”
