Leeds bus strike June 2023 update as drivers cancel walkout after new pay deal is offered

A bus drivers' strike in Leeds has been postponed after a new pay deal has been offered.

Planned industrial action began on Sunday, June 18, and 800 Unite members walked out following dispute over pay. Images and videos shared across social media show workers on the picket lines.

Further strikes were due to take place today and First Bus warned of a limited service and 39 routes not running throughout Monday, June 19. The bus company has issued an update confirming further strikes have been postponed.

First Bus said a pay settlement had been agreed with union Unite, and there will be a "full return" of normal bus services on Tuesday, June 20. In an update a spokesperson for First Bus said: "Industrial action in Leeds has now been postponed. We will continue to run a limited service throughout Monday with last buses around 19:00.

"We aim to return to a full service from Tuesday 20 June. A huge thank you to our customers for your patience." Unite will put the offer to its members in a ballot on 29 June.

First Bus added: "We’re committed to keeping you moving during the industrial action. However, we won’t know until each morning how many drivers will be available which means there may be short notice changes.

"We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause, especially to those customers whose services will not be running during the industrial action."
