If you don't like your mattress, but you can't afford a new bed, I've got the topper for you

The Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper on a bed against a gray wall.

A few years ago, I got a new mattress for my guest room. Between family staying from out of town and my children hosting sleepovers, it gets a lot of use. I thought I'd invested in a quality mattress, but reviews from guests were mixed. I wanted to find a solution that would make my guests more comfortable, without spending a fortune on a new bed.

That's when I started researching mattress toppers. I learned that latex toppers received great reviews from all types of sleepers: perfect for a guest room with a revolving door of visitors. I settled on the Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper and I couldn't be happier with my choice.

The bouncy feel of latex is responsive and distinct from memory foam: I actually found it far more comfortable. In all my time testing the Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper, I never woke up with aches and pains. In fact, the topper arrived just as a heatwave was hitting, and it kept me cool on sweltering nights. I think it's one of the best mattress toppers on the market.

Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper review

I sampled the Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper in Medium firmness for a California King bed. The topper comes in three thicknesses: 2", 3", and 4". I went in the middle and found that the 3" topper added noticeable loft to my mattress, but not so much that it stretched my sheets.

  • Comfort and support: The Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper offers seven zones of specialized support to target each area of your body. I put it to the test, so I can confirm it's not just marketing jargon: you really can feel the difference. The mattress topper felt firmer beneath my head and feet, while the zones below my hips and back were a little softer, designed to lift my lumbar region and lengthen my spine to promote proper alignment. The zones beneath my shoulders and thighs felt softer still, perfect for pressure relief and ideal for side sleepers who need a mattress with give.
  • Breathability: The Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper is perforated with thousands of tiny holes, which optimize airflow throughout the foam to keep you cool. As a hot sleeper testing through a heatwave, I was seriously impressed with the breathability of latex, which slept far cooler than memory foam. In fact, I'd put it up there with the best cooling mattress toppers and pads.
  • Motion isolation: The motion isolation was much better than I expected. To assess the motion isolation of the mattress topper, I placed a glass in the center of the bed, then placed a 20-pound weight beside it. The water hardly moved, even when I placed the weight very close to the glass. I also tried tossing and turning across the mattress: still no water spilled, even when I was a couple of inches away from the glass. My old memory foam mattress underneath the topper has far inferior motion isolation, so this was a welcome surprise. I'd recommend the Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper for light sleepers and anyone who shares a bed with a pet or partner.

  • Edge support: this was something of a disappointment. When I placed the same weight on the side of the bed, next to the glass of water, it caused the glass to topple significantly. Some water even splashed over the sides. This indicates poor edge support, which could pose problems for anyone who sleeps on the side of the bed or who sleeps with a partner who sleeps later and wakes earlier. I found that the Nolah Mattress Topper offers better much better edge support.
  • Weight bearing: to test the firmness of the Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper, I placed a 20-pound weight in the middle of the bed. The weight sunk into the topper and caused it to pucker. This is what I'd expect from latex, which is highly responsive to movement. As soon as the weight was removed, the Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper sprang right back into shape. This is just the sort of topper you'd want to lend support to an old, sagging mattress. If you're looking to soften up an firm bed, however, you'd be better off with something like the Birch Plush Organic Mattress Topper.

  • Construction: unlike most mattress toppers, the Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper is uncovered and comes without straps. It just looks like a big block of foam that you set on top of your mattress. If you're shopping for a standard mattress topper, I suggest you try the Saatva Graphite Mattress Topper, instead: it's the best we've ever tested.
  • Sleep tracking: I wear a watch that tracks my sleep every night. I usually get a sleep score around 80, which is in the 'good range'. My sleep score didn't change dramatically while testing the Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper, and my average length of sleep and ratio of light vs deep sleep remained consistent. While there is always room for improvement, I was glad to see that my sleep score did not decrease while using the topper.
  • Trials and warranties: the Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper comes with a 120 day sleep trial period. That's enough to test the topper through a few seasons before you commit to your purchase. The Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper also comes with a five-year warranty that covers most manufacturing defects, aside from 'burns, cuts, stains, spills, soiling, discoloration that occurs over time, chemical smells, and dampness or mold'. It's up to you to keep your topper in good condition.

How does the Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper rate online?

The Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper boasts a 4.2 average star rating on Amazon. Almost every reviewer raves about the eco-friendly materials and transformative feel of the topper, with a few noting that their aches and pains have abated since using the topper. While there are a handful of more mixed reviews, they're mostly a matter of personal preference: a few customers wish that they had opted for a firmer topper, such as the Earthfoam Mattress Topper.

Should I buy the Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper?

The price of the Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper fluctuates depending on size and firmness. I tested a California King topper in Medium, which retails for around $400. Only you know whether that price falls within your budget or if you'd prefer to save up and get the best affordable mattress to replace your old one.

As far as I'm concerned, the Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper is worth the money. Sure, the edge support leaves a little to be desired, but it's comfortable, cooling, and custom-made to your sleep specifications. Since I placed the Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper in my guest bedroom, our visitors have started sleeping better, and that's all the proof I need that it was worth the purchase.

How we test mattress toppers

(Image credit: Future / Jamie Davis Smith)

We put a lot of thought into how we test mattress toppers. It's more than a matter of sleeping on the job. Our expert testers sample mattress toppers for weeks, if not months, to monitor their performance over time. Each topper is assessed against the same criteria: comfort; support; cooling properties; motion isolation; edge support; weight-bearing; and the all-important price.

Some of these tests are more subjective than others. To assess the comfort and support of a mattress topper, we simply lie on it and see how we feel. The rest of the tests are more scientific. We strategically place weights on each mattress topper to measure its motion isolation; edge support; and weight-bearing capacity.

We also consider the materials that make up a mattress topper, which will skew the results of our tests. A memory foam mattress topper should feel soft, yet supportive, while a latex topper, such as this one from Turmerry, is springy and responsive. We would expect the Turmerry Latex Mattress Topper to excel on the comfort and support tests, though it might be too bouncy to offer perfect motion isolation.

Where possible, we compare our findings against a wide range of customer reviews. This means that we can reflect a wider range of experiences to help you find a topper that meets your needs. Finally, we consider all of our results against the cost of the mattress topper to help you determine value for money.
