Huge fire in Glasgow city centre as emergency crews rush to tackle blaze

A huge fire has broken out at a building in Glasgow as emergency crews battle to control the flames.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were called to reports of a fire on Kingston Street in the Tradeston area of Glasgow, near the Barclays building, at around 9.55am this morning.

Nine fire appliances are currently in attendance as they look to bring the blaze under control. A video from the scene shows white smoke filling the sky across the city centre.

Local diversions are in place as Police Scotland have been forced to close surrounding roads as firefighters battle to bring the fire under control. They are also advising the public to close windows and not to gather near the incident due to high levels of smoke in the area.

An eyewitness at the scene told Glasgow Live: "I just got up and was shocked to see this much smoke and a fire near the Barclays building.

"It was started slowly and peaked within five minutes. There were no sign of the fire engines for the first 20 minutes but they have been here since."

Others reported a smell of burning plastic around the city centre.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: " The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted at 9:55am on Sunday 16 October to reports of a fire within a building on Kingston Street Glasgow. Operations control immediately mobilised nine appliances and crews remain at the scene."

Police Scotland said in a statement: "Due to a fire in Kingston Street, near the junction with Centre Street, a number of roads in the area are closed. Local diversions are in place. We are advising people to keep their windows closed due to the smoke and not to gather on the street. SFRS are dealing with the fire."
