Hawaii world surf season opener delayed by conditions

Sally Fitzgibbons' Championship Tour return has been delayed by the wind in Hawaii. (HANDOUT/WORLD SURF LEAGUE)

The world's leading surfers will have to wait a little longer to get their 2024 Championship Tour campaign under way, with poor conditions putting a halt to day one of the season-opening Pipe Pro in Hawaii.

Unfavourable wind at the famous Banzai Pipeline on the north shore of Oahu caused the World Surf League (WSL) to postpone competition for Monday local time.

The next call will be taken at 7.45am Tuesday (4.45am Wednesday AEDT).

"Right now, we have some pretty big swell. There's definitely size, but the winds are problematic," the WSL's chief of sport Jessi Miley-Dyer said.

"Tomorrow is going to be difficult as well, looking similar to today. Wednesday looks like a great opportunity to run.

"We're looking at some better conditions and wind patterns.

"In the back end of the window, in particular, it looks like we'll have some great opportunities."

When competition does get going, former world No.1 Sally Fitzgibbons' return to the world tour will begin with a heat against Costa Rica's Brisa Hennessy, and five-time world champion and local favourite Carissa Moore.

Fitzgibbons' fellow Australian Molly Picklum - who finished last season ranked fifth - will kick-off against Brazilian Tatiana Weston-Webb and US surfer Alyssa Spencer.

Other Australian women in action include Tyler Wright, India Robinson and Isabella Nichols, while Stephanie Gilmore - the eight-time world champion - is having a sabbatical for the season.

In one of the highlights of the men's opening round, Australia's Jack Robinson - winner of last season's Pipe Pro - will take on 51-year-old US legend Kelly Slater, the 11-time world champion, and Rio Waida from Indonesia.

Callum Robson, Ethan Ewing, Liam O'Brien, Ryan Callinan and Jacob Willcox are the other Australian men represented.
