Nicki Nicole on healing, toxic social media, and the goosebumps of singing in New York in the fall - INTERVIEW

Argentinian Latin music powerhouse Nicki Nicole possesses a rarity: light green eyes, a feature shared by less than 2% of the global population. More captivating than her striking looks, however, is her self-awareness, a trait that she channels into her music, making her standout in the industry. This artistic integrity shines through in her latest single, "Ojos Verdes," marking a pivotal moment in her career.

"Ojos Verdes" sends a poignant message to an undeserving ex, mirroring the real-life emotional turmoil following her split from Mexican artist Peso Pluma. In a candid interview with The Latin Times, amidst preparations for her first U.S. tour, Nicki shared, "The song captures my true feelings, laying bare where my heart stands."

This transparency marks a departure from her previous album, "Alma," where she held back to avoid vulnerability. "Back then, I hesitated to fully express myself, fearing judgment. But now, I'm embracing my reality—sadness and all. It's a human experience to discuss openly," she reflects.

The price of vulnerability

Addressing her fanbase, Nicki comments, "True fans would never critique my personal life. Those who do aren't really fans; they're just bystanders with opinions."

To the world, the sadness closely tied to Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija, known professionally as Peso Pluma. Their relationship ended abruptly in early 2024 when Peso Pluma was publicly spotted in a scandalous encounter. "I found out about it the same way everyone else did," Nicki disclosed in a rare social media post about the incident.

The fact that "Ojos verdes" is a cumbia is also very telling. "I traveled a lot to Rosario (her hometown) to visit my family, and every time I came back, I would put together a playlist of cumbia santafesina and I came back listening to it," recalled Nicki Nicole. "So one day, in one of those chats with one of my best friends, who is also my producer, Santi (Santiago Ruiz 'Tatool'), told me 'my friend, you have to make a cumbia. That's who you are; that's where you come from, and that's when we started to put together what Ojos Verdes". The single is her first foray into cumbia by herself, following "La otra noche", her collab with Los Ángeles Azules.

Cumbia and family to mend a broken heart. It doesn't really get more Latin American than that.

Toxic fandom is a hard NO

The level of aggression between fandoms on social media is reaching scary levels, and Nicki Nicole is very aware of what is going on. "Personally, it makes me very uncomfortable because I know the girls (other Argentinian female music artists), and we know how hard each one of them works and how hard each one of them works to be compared," she said, talking about colleagues like Emilia Mernes, Lali, Cazzu, TINI and more.

She is philosophical about it. We are talking about a huge number of fans. Only in Instagram she have more than 22 million followers As with comments about her personal life or her looks, she tries not to focus too much on it. "You can't control what people will say. The only thing we can do is be clear with each other and make it clear that I do not endorse this," Nicki added.

Nicki Nicole is also emphatic about the love and support between her and her true fans. "They are everything to me."
