Eamonn Holmes breaks silence with 'great day' comment after Phillip Schofield quits This Morning

Eamonn Holmes has broken his silence after Phillip Schofield announced his departure from ITV's This Morning.

Phillip, 61, spent over 20 years on air with the ITV show. However, his exit was confirmed yesterday (May 20), amid speculation about a feud with co-host Holly Willoughby.

Northern Irish broadcaster Eamonn worked on This Morning between 2006 and 2021, presenting with his wife Ruth Holmes on occasion. The pair were replaced by Dermot O'Leary and Alison Hammond, with Eamonn now working for GB News.

After the news of Phillip's departure from the show broke, Eamonn, 63, tweeted saying it was "a good day". Sharing a picture of him being kissed on the cheek by granddaughter Emilia, he said: ""Pappa got a smacker. Thank u Emilia. All in all that rounded off what turned out to be a good day".

A number of fans replied, assuming Eamonn was referring to the day's big showbiz story.

One follower wrote: "Ha ha Eamonn, I know you must be happy with the news". Another added: "I see what you did there. Love it".

A fourth said: "Fantastic pic and epic comment. karma."

The tweet was posted hours after Phillip announced his departure. In a statement, the veteran presenter said: “I have always been proud to cover fascinating stories on This Morning. But recently, This Morning itself has become the story.

“Throughout my career in TV – including the very difficult last few days – I have always done my best to be honourable and kind. I understand that ITV has decided the current situation can’t go on, and I want to do what I can to protect the show that I love.

“So I have agreed to step down from This Morning with immediate effect, in the hope that the show can move forward to a bright future. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me – especially This Morning’s amazing viewers – and I’ll see you all for the Soap Awards next month.”

Eamonn has previously posted a cryptic message and has spoken on air about Holly and Phil after controversy arose last year following accusations that the presenting pair skipped the queue to see the Queen lying in state.
