David Moyes addresses long-running Liverpool drought as West Ham lose at Anfield again

West Ham boss David Moyes admits he is “fed up” of leaving Anfield wondering what might’ve been after a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool extended his miserable record at the ground on Sunday afternoon.

Moyes has never won a Premier League match at Anfield, a drought that now stretches to 19 matches across the course of his career, but his West Ham side have gone close to bucking the trend on several occasions in recent seasons.

The Hammers’ two previous visits had both ended in narrow 1-0 wins for the home side, with Jarrod Bowen missing a penalty in last season’s fixture.

Bowen was on the scoresheet here this afternoon, cancelling out Mohamed Salah’s first-half penalty with a fine header, but the Hammers spurned several other opportunities before goals from Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota saw Jurgen Klopp’s side claim what was eventually a deserved three points.

“We did a pretty good job in the first-half,” Moyes said. “Even the second-half, [but] I was disappointed with the second goal. We were always under pressure as well but there were lots of positives to take from the game. We’ve come and had a bit of a go.

“I’m more disappointed with the second and third goals, probably more so the third because while we’re at 2-1 we’re still in the game. There’s still a game on to get something out of it.

“I actually think we played quite well today, did a lot of good things. But I come away from here too often saying the same things, so I’m a bit fed up saying it.

“If you come here you might only get three chances, while Liverpool will have ten. You have to hope that they will miss nine of them. You have to hope that when you get three you can take two of them and get yourself a result.”

Meanwhile, Moyes insisted he had no regrets over Jesse Lingard’s spell training with the club coming to an end. Lingard, who enjoyed a successful loan spell at the London Stadium during the 2020/21 season, is a free agent and had been building his fitness at Rush Green as West Ham considered the possibility of signing the midfielder on a short-term deal.

This week, however, that arrangement came to an end, with Lingard instead heading to Saudi Arabia to train with Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq.

“I’m quite comfortable and more than relaxed about it,” Moyes added. “We like Jesse a lot but I just don’t know if we need another player in the position that Jesse plays."
