Daniel Radcliffe says it's time to start 'actually listening to trans kids'

Actor Daniel Radcliffe has long been an outspoken ally to the LGBTQ+ community, although his first major support for trans rights was back in 2020 when he released a statement with the Trevor Project.

The Trevor Project works to support queer youth, creating a safe space and crisis lines for anyone who may be in trouble or needing resources tailored to LGBTQ+ issues.

Once again the Miracle Workers actor is working with The Trevor Project, in a series called Sharing Spaces where LGBTQ+ youths can discuss their personal journeys with adults and allies - starting with Radcliffe speaking to six transgender youths.

The actor has been a supporter of the Trevor Project since 2009 (The Trevor Project)

In a short trailer, Radcliffe can be seen speaking to six trans and non-binary young people about their lived experiences in an open and candid discussion.

The 33-year-old said: "There are some people in the world who are not trying to engage with this conversation in any good faith. I think it's because a lot of people don't know a young trans person, so there's just this theoretical idea in their head."

One young person shared they believe trans and non binary rights come down to "respect", they said: "I'm a person, you're a person, I treat you with respect so I deserve it back."

Radcliffe, who has been a supporter of the Trevor Project since 2009, released a statement, which read: "We listen to so many people talk about trans youth and hear them talked about so often in the news, but very rarely do we actually hear from these youth directly.

"It was an absolute privilege to get to meet and listen to this incredible group of young people.

"At the end of the day, if you're going to talk about trans kids, it might be useful to actually listen to trans kids."

Each 20 minute episode will feature a new host and participates, talking about an issue facing the LGBTQ+ community but specifically allowing young people to have a say and share their thoughts.

"Our goal in developing this kind of content is to turn the microphone toward LGBTQ young people themselves and let them speak directly about their lives, which they know best," said Megan Stowe, VP of Brand and Content at The Trevor Project.

"LGBTQ young people, particularly transgender and nonbinary youth, are routinely forced to stand by and watch adults debate their very existence and life experiences.

"Our society has created boxes that young people are expected to fit into, when we should be giving them the space and autonomy to figure out who they are on their own.

"That's why it's so important that we continue to amplify young LGBTQ voices that are so often silenced, and work towards creating a safer, more accepting world where they can thrive just as they are."

The first episode of Sharing Spaces airs on The Trevor Project's YouTube channel at 5pm on March 31, 2023 - which is internationally recognised as Trans Visibility Day.
