Corrie's Beth Sutherland actress' real life from hidden talent to health battle

Coronation Street fans were left disappointed when they saw Beth Sutherland smooch a former flame behind Kirk's back.

Lisa George plays the Underworld machinist in the ITV soap and she was reminded of ex Marco weeks ago, before Glenda Shuttleworth swiped her phone and added him on social media.

Beth was given the cold shoulder by Kirk when he discovered she lied about slapping his mates' daughter Hope Stape - she found herself drawn to her equally 80s-mad former lover and the pair met up behind Kirk's back.

In scenes aired this week, Beth met with Marco again, this time heading to the precinct to enjoy a milkshake, reports the Manchester Evening News.

As their flirty behaviour continued, they decided to share a ride on the swings and Marco finally made his feelings clear as he confessed he wants to get back with her.

There was then an unfortunate spillage of their drinks and Beth was forced to grab some clothes from the charity shop and change, with him acting as a modesty shield, before getting her bus home.

And it wasn't long before Marco leaned in for a kiss and, after touching lips, a flustered Beth made a hasty retreat, but not before they were seemingly caught, unknowingly, by Hope.

But could this spell the end for Beth and Kirk? As we all know, the schoolgirl isn't shy in causing trouble.

Beth first appeared on the cobbles in 2011 when Steve McDonald delved into his little black book and gave Beth a call when he was after a date to make his wife Becky jealous.

Then, the following year, Steve again used her when he moved Beth and her son Craig into No.13 to wind up his new wife Tracy Barlow.

But the rest, as they say, is history and Lisa has been portraying Beth in Wetherfield ever since.

However, it wasn't the actress' first stint on a soap as she's appeared in Emmerdale as well as Holby City.

And it's not even her first time in Corrie! Her first time on the cobbles came back in 1997, when she appeared as a young nurse working alongside Martin Platt.

She later appeared as a Family Liaison Officer working on the investigation into Tommy Harris's murder - appearing for five episodes between March and April 2005.

Before any of that, she appeared in The Bill as Melissa Wilson for one episode in 1994 and she's also worked on the medical drama Holby City and Emmerdale, when she played a guest role as Pauline Arkwright.

But not many fans will know that Lisa can sing.

Last year, she swapped the cobbles of Weatherfield for the bright lights of the stage when she transformed into one of the most recognisable roles in ITV's All Star Musicals.

The show sees the celebrities embark on the ultimate musical theatre masterclass and hope to be voted All Star Musical's champion with their spectacular performance.

Lisa's transformation rendered her unrecognisable as she ditched her Corrie character's trademark blonde locks and 80s-inspired look for a cropped black wig and kimono-style gown, channelling Sally Bowles, the role made famous by Hollywood icon Liza Minnelli in Cabaret.

In an interview at the same time, the soap star revealed that singing was one of her first loves, but her confidence was knocked during her early years - she was even sacked from a job as they told her she 'couldn't sing'.

She explained that she’d been singing throughout her childhood and teens in school and church choirs before winning a signing scholarship at drama school.

"I always wanted to go into musical theatre, I’ve done festivals and started winning, and thought 'Oh yeah, maybe I can,'" she said on ITV's Lorraine.

"I'd just finished off tour and I was in this show, a new show which was at Blackpool with a few stars and everything, and they sacked me and said I couldn’t sing," she revealed.

"I lost the money, I was homeless, I had to go back to my mum and dad’s and I didn’t open my mouth.

"I didn’t sing.

"I was absolutely crushed."

Away from her work, the talented star was sadly left half-blind in her right eye after suffering a mini-stroke.

Lisa, who has also been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, haemorrhaged behind her optic nerve a number of years ago and said it left lasting damage to her sight.

She also revealed that she got hit in the eye with some rope.

Lisa previously told The Sun in 2020: "I haemorrhaged behind my optic nerve four years ago and I’m half-blind in my right eye, they said it was like a stroke but also I got hit in the eye with a bit of rope.

They think I’d had some mini-stroke but a specialist said it has to be the rope, I still don’t know." Due to her type 2 diabetes, Lisa also spent much of the coronavirus pandemic shielding, meaning she had somewhat of a 'soap break' and spent some time off-screen.

And she also previously opened up about taking a break from acting, as she managed her menopause symptoms.

"Well basically the menopause hit me like a brick," she said on an episode of Lorraine with Ranvir Singh.

"I was suffering with the hot sweats, emotionally...

It started actually on Dancing On Ice when the mechanics of things were going a bit haywire.

Then last year [2021] my weight had piled on, it affected my diabetes.

"I spoke to an endocrinologist going, ‘I can’t cope, what’s going on?’ She said, ‘It’s messed your diabetes up.

It’s gone off the scale.’ So I had to see a specialist nurse to get me back with my sugars." Last month, Lisa took on a challenge to raise awareness for prostate cancer after it affected some of the men she loves most in life.

She took part in the March the Month event, in which she walked 11,000 steps a day to represent the more than 11,000 dads, partners, brothers, grandads and mates who die from prostate cancer every year.

She told Prostate Cancer UK: "I was aware that prostate cancer was the most common cancer in men but was shocked to learn that it was so high.

Prostate cancer has had a huge impact on my own family, which is why I think it’s so important to do what I can to raise awareness and support Prostate Cancer UK."Not only was my dad, Ken, diagnosed with the disease, but so were my grandfather and uncle.

That’s three people in my immediate family, which is just mind-blowing.

Thankfully, all three of them were successfully treated before it got too late.

My family were lucky, but unfortunately that isn’t always the outcome."
