Connecticut State Police recently announced a significant breakthrough in a decades-old cold case, revealing the identity of one of the victims found in a shallow grave almost 50 years ago. Linda Sue Childers was identified as one of the individuals involved in a double homicide that occurred on December 31, 1970, in Ledyard, Connecticut.

The skeletal remains of Childers and another victim were discovered in 1974, nearly three-and-a-half years after the tragic incident took place. Despite the challenges posed by Childers' use of an unverified alias, investigators were able to confirm her identity through meticulous forensic work and collaboration with genetic genealogy experts.

Following the recovery of the bodies, authorities found personal belongings, including clothing and jewelry, with Childers' remains. These items, such as a tan leather vest, a gold or tan sweater, a brown tweed skirt, and brown granny boots, provided valuable clues in the identification process. Notably, a class ring with unique engravings played a crucial role in linking Childers to her family.

Efforts to solve the case were significantly boosted by advancements in forensic science technology and the application of forensic investigative genetic genealogy. By leveraging DNA analysis and traditional genealogy research, investigators were able to make substantial progress in unraveling the mystery surrounding Childers' identity.

In a heartening development, DNA samples led to the identification of Childers' sister and ultimately her daughter, who provided confirmation of her mother's identity. The collaboration between law enforcement agencies and genetic genealogy experts culminated in the long-awaited closure for Childers' family, offering them answers and a sense of peace.

The resolution of this cold case serves as a testament to the persistence and dedication of law enforcement officials and forensic experts in pursuing justice and bringing closure to families impacted by unsolved crimes. The identification of Linda Sue Childers marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to seek justice for victims and their loved ones.
