Police cordon off street in Manchester city centre after man climbs up scaffolding

Police cordoned off a major road near Manchester city centre on Monday evening (July 10) after a topless man climbed up scaffolding.

Fire crews, paramedics and police cordoned off part of Oxford Street, beside the Palace Theatre, as emergency services responded to the incident, which was reported at around 6.40pm.

Pictures and videos shared with the Manchester Evening News showed the man climbing up scaffolding on a building with police tape blocking off the main road into the city centre.

One witness, who provided pictures and videos to the M.E.N, said that the person was 'shouting' at the public who were watching on. Police confirmed the man was later brought down to safety and is being supported by officers. No injuries were reported.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 6:40pm this evening, officers were called to a concern for welfare of a male on scaffolding near Oxford Street in Manchester City Centre.

“Emergency services and specialist negotiators attended the scene, and the male was brought to safety. He is currently being supported by GMP officers and support services. No injuries have been reported. No arrests have been made.”
