Child, 7, rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by car with driver arrested

A seven-year-old child was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car in Gorton on Wednesday afternoon (July 12).

Emergency services attended the scene of the collision, where the child, who was a pedestrian and understood to be a young boy, was struck by the vehicle.

Police cordoned off Hemsworth Road at around 4.45pm, as witnesses reported seeing the child being treated at the roadside by paramedics before he was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and has been taken into custody for questioning.

One resident of Hemsworth Road told the Manchester Evening News: "I was sitting in the back working and suddenly I heard all the noise and sirens. It is scary for our children as we walk them back from Gorton Primary School every day.

"There are lots of families with young kids around here. We try to keep our children in the back garden because there are big problems with this road, people drive at 60 or 70 mph."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 4:45pm today (Wednesday 12 July 2023), officers were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian on Hemsworth Road in Manchester.

"Emergency services attended the scene, and a 7-year-old child was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The driver remained at the scene and officers conducted further enquiries at the scene.

"A man in his 30’s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and has been taken to custody for further questioning. A scene remains in place while officers conduct further enquiries."
