Boris Johnson's baby name inspired by Greek hero who 'leaves wife behind'

Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie Johnson have welcomed their third child together, it's today been announced.

The former Prime Minister has a penchant for unusual monikers - and looks to be continuing the trend with his latest arrival. Confirming the happy news in a post to Instagram on July 11, media advisor Carrie shared a picture of herself holding the newborn. She wrote: "Welcome to the world Frank Alfred Odysseus Johnson born 5th July at 9.15am (Can you guess which name my husband chose?!

"Am loving every minute of the sleepy baby bubble. Seeing my older two embrace their new brother with such joy and excitement has been the most wonderful thing to see. We are all very smitten."

Odysseus - the name she was presumably referencing - comes from Greek mythology. However, the pair have yet to share why they settled on the hero of Homer's Odyssey when looking for name inspiration.

A well-known, much-talked-about public figure, Odysseus leaves his wife and infant when he sets sail for the Trojan War, and he does not return for 20 years.

The tale goes that he then encounters numerous women as he attempts to journey home. To overcome the challenges he faces on the way, the wily Odysseus must rely on his bravery and quick thinking, employing several cunning schemes - made possible, in part, by his skill as a liar.

While Odysseus' portrayal is also positive in many ways - Homer repeatedly calls his hero resourceful, and dedicates an entire poem to him - the name's translation leaves a lot to be desired.

Meaning "wrathful" or "son of pain", according to differing translations, Odysseus has often been considered "too weighty" a name for kids, according to Nameberry.

"The name of the brave, resourceful hero of Homer's epic saga has almost always been considered too weighty for a child to bear," said the experts, although they acknowledged some may be willing to take it on.

Whatever the reason, it's proven popular with Boris Johnson, who studied Classics at college.

Boris and Carrie previously welcomed two children together: Wilfred, who was born in April 2020 and Romy, who was born in December 2021. Boris, 59, also has five other children from previous relationships.
