The Woman Who Accused Armie Hammer Of Sexual Assault Has Spoken Out In A Powerful Statement

CONTENT WARNING: This article discusses sexual assault, physical abuse and suicide.

The woman who accused actor Armie Hammer of sexual assault has expressed her deep “disappointment” that he will not be charged with allegations stemming from a 2021 police report.

Following a police report in February 2021 from an accuser known as Effie (who posts on Instagram as @houseofeffie), the Los Angeles Police Department conducted a lengthy investigation, according to Variety.

Effie claimed that during her four-year relationship with Armie Hammer, the actor was physically abusive, and she alleged he violently raped her in 2017.

Effie’s story was bolstered by numerous other women seemingly coming forward with screenshots of disturbing DMs and accusations levelled at Armie Hammer.

In its statement as quoted by The Guardian, the LA district attorney’s office said: “In this case, those prosecutors conducted an extremely thorough review, but determined that at this time, there is insufficient evidence to charge Mr Hammer with a crime.

“As prosecutors, we have an ethical responsibility to only charge cases that we can prove beyond a reasonable doubt … Due to the complexity of the relationship and inability to prove a non-consensual, forcible sexual encounter, we are unable to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.”

In a statement sent to multiple publications, Effie said she was disappointed with the outcome of the investigation and that she stood by her claims.

“I felt a duty to speak out and file a report in order to try to hold Armie accountable for all the harm and trauma he has caused me and in order to protect other women from experiencing similar abuse,” she said, per Page Six.

“It has cost me a great deal to have spoken out and filed a report against Armie’s abuse.

“My hope is that one day, rapists won’t get away with it,” she added.

Speaking to Insider on Thursday morning, Effie said the the long and traumatic investigation had left her “terrified of men”.

“Your rapist will claim it’s your fault and the police will ask you what you were wearing when you got raped,” she said.

“And they’ll say they won’t do anything because they think your ‘relationship’ was ‘complicated’. This is why rape is so underreported.”

Hammer himself published a brief statement on Instagram where he said he was “grateful” to the District Attorney for having his name “cleared”. Though that is perhaps not accurate — the investigation determined there was not an evidence to warrant a charge. It does not comment on his innocence or guilt.

“I am very grateful to the District Attorney for conducting a thorough investigation and coming to the conclusion that I have stood by this entire time, that no crime was committed,” he wrote.

“I look forward to beginning what will be a long, difficult process of putting my life back together now that my name is cleared.”

Armie Hammer previously aired his side of the story in a tell-all interview with Air Mail, in which he revealed he felt suicidal after the allegations surfaced and walked into the ocean in an attempt to end his life. He also spoke about being sexually assaulted as a child, and said this was what led to his pattern of abusive behaviour.
