Angela Bassett Reflects On Challenging Role As Tina Turner.

Angela Bassett faced physical and emotional challenges portraying Tina Turner.

Angela Bassett recently opened up about the challenges she faced while portraying music icon Tina Turner in the 1993 biopic What's Love Got to Do with It. The actress revealed that embodying Turner's character was both physically and emotionally demanding, particularly during the reenactment of the more tragic aspects of Turner's life.

In the film, Bassett starred as Tina Turner alongside Laurence Fishburne, who portrayed Ike Turner, Tina's abusive ex-husband and musical partner. The movie delved into the tumultuous relationship between the two musicians, highlighting the years of abuse that Tina endured at the hands of Ike.

Bassett described the intense filming process, which often involved shooting graphic and violent scenes for up to 16 hours a day. She recalled how Fishburne supported her during the challenging moments on set, serving as her advocate and ensuring that they approached the scenes with sensitivity and professionalism.

One particularly harrowing scene depicted Ike choking Tina and assaulting her in front of a fish tank. Bassett admitted that portraying such violence, including a rape scene, took a significant emotional toll on her.

Despite the difficulties she faced during the production of What's Love Got to Do with It, Bassett acknowledged the impact the film had on her career. The role earned her critical acclaim and her first Oscar nomination, marking a pivotal moment in her acting journey.

Reflecting on her experience, Bassett emphasized the importance of the film in her life, recognizing its potential to bring about positive changes in her career trajectory. She also shared her gratitude for the recognition she received, including an honorary Oscar earlier this year.

As the film shed light on the issue of domestic violence, Bassett encouraged those experiencing abuse to seek help. She provided resources for individuals in need, including the National Domestic Violence Hotline and the Crisis Text Line for victims of sexual abuse.
