Aldi asks shoppers for help as it launches 'Adult Breakfast Club' to feed struggling parents

Aldi has announced a new initiative set to help parents across the country who are struggling to put food on the table for themselves.

The supermarket is launching an 'Adults Breakfast Club', which involves donating 10 tonnes of cereal and 5,000 gallons of milk and milk alternatives to food banks with the help of charity partner Neighbourly. The aim is to "help ensure all parents are getting the food they need" amid the cost of living crisis that has left many households facing a daily battle to make ends meet.

"Despite breakfast being widely regarded as the most important meal of the day, millions of parents are skipping it to ensure their children have enough food," the retailer said. "Aldi believes that having access to fresh and healthy food should be a right, not a privilege."

The partnership between Aldi and Neighbourly has now been rolled out to every UK store, and sees surplus food collected from the supermarkets to be donated to food banks. Additionally, shoppers who want to go the extra mile have the option to add something extra to their baskets and drop it off at donation points in store.

The retailer has also asked shoppers to help out with the initiative, if they have the means to do so, by making a donation via the Aldi website. A donation of just £5 will provide 30 breakfast meals for families in need, Aldi said.

The supermarket is already donating essential baby items such as nappies and wipes to charities across the UK who help new parents in need, as well as donating over 100,000 books so that "all children experience the magic of reading". Individual stores also donate surplus food to local good causes, including soup kitchens and children's breakfast clubs.

Liz Fox, corporate responsibility director at Aldi UK, said of the Neighbourly partnership: "We’re always looking for new and creative ways to increase the amount of food we are able to donate. This partnership is enabling us to distribute even more surplus stock, while supporting a vast range of good causes.

"Our aim is for fresh, healthy food to be accessible for everyone, and Neighbourly are helping us to extend this commitment beyond our affordable range of fresh products."

Neighbourly CEO Steve Butterworth said: "We are delighted to be partnering with Aldi on this programme and to help them realise their ambition to benefit those communities local to each and every one of their stores across the UK. Food surplus is a challenge Aldi is committed to playing its part to address.

"This approach is critical to ensure surplus food finds its way easily to the good causes supporting those communities that need it most.
