Brexit result: MPs from all corners lash out at PM's humiliating Commons defeat

Theresa May’s humiliating defeat in the Commons sparked a backlash from MPs on both sides of the political divide who lashed out at the state of the Brexit negotiations.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn led the condemnation of the Prime Minister’s divorce deal as he tabled a motion of no confidence in the government after Tuesday night’s vote.

Mr Corbyn said the confidence vote, which is to be debated in Parliament tomorrow, would allow the Commons to “give its verdict on the sheer incompetence of this government”.

Liberal Democrats leader Sir Vince Cable called for a new referendum in the wake of the Withdrawal Agreement's defeat. He tweeted: "This defeat is beyond what anyone imagined. It is the beginning of the end of Brexit. Time for a #PeoplesVote"

“We want an orderly exit from the European Union with a sensible deal which works for Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom."

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: "The only sensible course of action now is to withdraw Article 50 and give British people the final say - with the option to stay in the EU."

"The PM says she is now going to reach out across the House of Commons, she could have done that two and a half years ago.

"I think her authority has been unbelievably damaged by what has happened tonight."

Shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Keir Starmer tweeted: "Labour's push for a meaningful vote all those months ago has been vindicated. Parliament's verdict on the Prime Minister's Brexit deal is clear and decisive.

“We can't go on like this.”

First Minister of Wales Mark Drakeford tweeted: "The Prime Minister's deal always fell well short of what is needed to protect our economy and jobs.

"Since its publication we have called on her government to go back to Brussels and ask for a deal that truly works for all of the UK. It's time for her to listen to us."
