Amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the World Central Kitchen (WCK), a US-based non-profit organization dedicated to fighting hunger globally, has resumed its feeding program in the region. This decision comes after a hiatus following a tragic incident in which seven WCK staffers were killed in an Israeli military strike in April.
The scene in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, was one of hope as Palestinian children eagerly lined up to receive hot meals from aid workers. Families, who had been surviving on canned food for weeks, expressed gratitude for the much-needed nourishment.
WCK founder Jose Andres acknowledged the difficulty of returning to Gaza after the loss of his colleagues but emphasized the organization's commitment to alleviating the suffering of the people in need. He stated, 'We cannot stand by while so many people are desperate for the essentials of life.'
The humanitarian situation in Gaza has been dire, with more than 34,600 Palestinians killed by Israeli attacks as of May 1. Over 1.9 million Palestinians have been forcibly displaced, leading to overcrowded tent camps with limited access to basic necessities.
According to the local health ministry, at least 30 children have already died from malnutrition and dehydration in Gaza, highlighting the urgent need for assistance. WCK's efforts to provide hot, nutritious meals have been welcomed by residents, offering a sense of comfort and normalcy amidst the turmoil.
Local WCK staffer Ashraf Al Sultan described the desperation among the displaced population, emphasizing the impact of the organization's food distribution. One young boy, Zaki Sobeh, expressed his gratitude for receiving a hot meal after a month of relying on canned food, saying, 'I say thank you and may God protect them.'
The resumption of WCK's feeding program in Gaza serves as a beacon of hope for a population facing immense challenges.
