UN Urges Security Council To Support UNRWA's Survival

The head of the U.N. agency supporting Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank has appealed to the Security Council to safeguard its existence amid Israeli calls for its dissolution. Philippe Lazzarini warned that dismantling the agency, known as UNRWA, would worsen Gaza's humanitarian crisis and hasten famine. International experts have raised concerns about imminent famine in northern Gaza, potentially affecting half of the territory's 2.3 million residents if the conflict escalates.

Lazzarini emphasized that ending UNRWA's operations would leave half a million children without education, exacerbate violence, and deprive Gaza's population of essential services like healthcare and food. Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan accused UNRWA of being infiltrated by Hamas and promoting a one-state solution led by Palestinians, calling for the agency's defunding.

The U.S. and other countries suspended contributions to UNRWA following allegations that 12 of its workers in Gaza were involved in a recent Hamas attack. Investigations are ongoing to address these claims and ensure the agency's neutrality. Lazzarini rejected accusations that UNRWA perpetuates Palestinian refugee status, stating its existence is due to the lack of a political solution.

During a Security Council meeting, all members, including the U.S., expressed support for UNRWA, highlighting its vital role in aiding Palestinian refugees. The Palestinian ambassador praised the unanimous backing for the agency. The U.S. urged Israel to allow UNRWA to deliver aid in Gaza to prevent famine.

Lazzarini reported that since the recent conflict, UNRWA personnel have been killed, and its facilities damaged, with allegations of misuse by various parties. He called for an independent investigation into these incidents. The U.S. expressed concerns over Israel's protection of aid workers and civilians, urging concrete steps to address humanitarian issues.

Despite funding challenges, most countries have resumed support for UNRWA, with decisions pending the outcome of an upcoming report. The agency faces financial gaps due to the U.S. funding suspension, necessitating adjustments to continue its operations until June.
