The situation in the U.S.-built pier where aid is supposed to be coming in is dire. While there has been a small amount of aid trickling in, it is nowhere near enough to meet the overwhelming need. Only 15 trucks' worth of aid have made it through the pier, but the larger issue lies in the fact that land crossings are effectively closed, preventing aid workers, doctors, and surgeons from reaching those in need.
As a result of the limited aid reaching the area, children are suffering from severe malnutrition and starvation. A study conducted in partnership with Medical Aid for the Palestinians revealed that the average child is only receiving 3% of the recommended daily water intake. This lack of clean water is contributing to a health crisis where surgeons are encountering emaciated internal organs during operations.
The situation has become so critical that Secretary Blinken has warned of an imminent threat of famine. Without significant and immediate intervention, the region is descending into a dire humanitarian crisis.
