Tragic Drowning Incident Claims Lives Of Hikers In Tennessee

23-year-old woman and 20-year-old man drowned near Rainbow Lake Trail.

Tragedy struck near Rainbow Lake Trail in Signal Mountain, Tennessee, on Sunday when a 23-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man lost their lives in a drowning incident. The Signal Mountain Police Department received a distressing 911 call around 7:13 p.m. reporting that the pair had gone underwater in a creek near the hiking trail.

Upon arrival, first responders were met by a woman who had been part of a group of three to four individuals hiking along the trail. The group had reached a large creek where one of the women attempted to cross but tragically fell into a deep section, submerging underwater. In a brave attempt to save her, a man from the group jumped in after her, but unfortunately, neither of them resurfaced.

Police and fire personnel immediately sprang into action, entering the water in an effort to locate and rescue the victims. The woman was found in the water and brought to shore, where life-saving measures were administered. Despite their best efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The search continued for the missing man, and his body was eventually recovered from the water.

The victims were identified as 23-year-old Greffania Merilus from Cohutta, Georgia, and 20-year-old Gullson Elve from Birchwood, Tennessee. Reports indicated that the pair were close friends, adding to the heartbreaking nature of the incident.

In response to this tragic event, Signal Mountain Town Council Member Susannah Murdock expressed the need for additional signage along the trail to alert hikers to potential dangers in the area. Murdock highlighted the rugged and steep terrain, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall when water flow in the area can become swift and hazardous.

The community mourns the loss of these two young lives and reflects on the importance of safety awareness while enjoying outdoor activities. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of Greffania Merilus and Gullson Elve during this difficult time.
