Thousands turn out in Dublin to support Trans and Intersex Pride demonstration

Thousands of people marched to Leinster House as part of the annual trans and intersex Dublin Pride march today.

The event kicked off at 2pm at the Garden of Remembrance before proceeding across the city centre to the Dail. According to organisers, this year's event's main focus was on the "lack of healthcare" for trans people with a seven- to ten-year wait for services overseen by the Government.

These issues include the waiting lists for trans healthcare and the National Gender Service psychiatric model of care. Organisers said they also marched against a “rise in the far-right in Ireland targeting refugees, and more recently LGBTQ+ people”.

Trans and Intersex Pride Dublin founder and co-organiser Ollie Bell described today as “the most significant Trans & Intersex Pride Dublin march to date”. They said: "We’re seeing the rise of the far right coinciding with an international push back against trans and intersex rights.

“Its more important than ever for our allies to stand in solidarity with the trans and intersex communities."

Many of those who participated in today carried placards and sported colourful attire. Several chanted calls for better trans healthcare and recognition.

The demonstration has now finished and participants are dispersing from the city centre. Traffic is moving smoothly, with no major delays.

Minister Roderic O’Gorman wished his Twitter followers a “Happy Trans Pride” day ahead of the event. He wrote on Twitter: "Happy Trans Pride. Today and every day, as Minister for Equality, I will stand up for human rights for trans people."
